Uganda was named ‘the Pearl of Africa’ by Sir Winston Churchill when it was still under the colonial rule of the British. The name is appropriate as the country nestles on Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest body of fresh water and home to the Source of the Nile. Besides the land being beautiful, populated, and diverse, it’s people are even more so - they are friendly and hospitable. In the past, Uganda has gone through a lot of war and hardship; AIDS is a battle they are still fighting, as well as poverty. The country is developing at a steady rate with agriculture, industry, oil and minerals, however, there is still a huge gap between the ‘haves and the have-nots’.
On this trip you will have the opportunity to serve alongside missionaries, Tim and Colleen Stevenson, and the Ugandan national church staff and volunteers. With them, you will visit homes in the materially needy part of the capital city of Kampala; homes affected by HIV and AIDS, including the elderly who care for many grandchildren.
There will be interaction with children in their schools, opportunity to minister to those who are pastors in the Northern part of the country near Gulu and Moyo, as well as participation in church services. This trip will also include a unique opportunity to minister to South Sudanese refugees living in large open camps/settlements in Northern Uganda. This will be a time to see ministry at a grassroots level and achieve friendships that could last a lifetime.
What are the accommodations?
- Your team will be staying in a mission house which will be clean, safe, and basic, and a local guest house in the village.
What will we eat?
- You will be eating North American foods at the mission house and traditional food while travelling, including: rice, steamed plantain bananas, maize bread, cassava, beans and ground nut sauce. There is an abundance of tropical fruit, too.
